Paulo Torres
Volta Redonda, RJ, 1972
Painting with fragments torn from the city.
Trained at the UFMG School of Fine Arts, Paulo Torres glues canvases to the streets, overpasses, walls and pavements of Belo Horizonte, tearing away the city’s own skin with them. From those fragments he builds landscapes that reinterpret the horizon hidden under the sea of concrete and asphalt.

The painting comes from earth and concrete, from the pigments time deposits on the city; the geometry comes from urban lines, angles and surfaces. He won his first prize in 1994, still at university, and has shown at SP-Arte, the Ibirapuera Biennial (2006–2008) and the Buenos Aires International Contemporary Art Fair (2008).
