A central sculptor of Brazilian modernism. Taken to Italy at the age of six, he trained between Rome and Paris, studying at the Grande Chaumière and Ranson academies under Aristide Maillol. He returned to Brazil in 1939.
His sculpture moves from the elongated, sensual human figure of the early years to constructive abstraction in bronze and marble. He made two of Brasília’s best-known monuments — Os Candangos, in the Praça dos Três Poderes, and Meteoro, in the reflecting pool at the Itamaraty.
