Carybé

Hector Julio Páride Bernabó — Carybé — arrived in Salvador in 1944 and stayed. Argentine by birth, he became a Brazilian citizen in 1957 and spent half a century drawing Bahia: candomblé, capoeira, the market, the docks, bodies in movement.

In 1950 he moved to the city for good to make panels for the Carneiro Ribeiro educational centre, at the invitation of Anísio Teixeira. He took an active part in the renewal of the visual arts in Bahia alongside Mário Cravo Júnior, Genaro de Carvalho and Jenner Augusto.

In 1981 he published the Iconography of the African Gods in the Candomblé of Bahia, and he illustrated books by Jorge Amado, Gabriel García Márquez and Pierre Verger.
