He began painting as a self-taught artist in 1970 and learned woodcut from Calasans Neto in 1972. He was also a student of Mário Cravo Júnior. In 1974 a Fulbright Commission scholarship took him to the United States: metal engraving and drawing at Wesleyan University, and visual arts at Cooper Union in New York, with Hans Haacke and Krishna Reddy.
He received the Order of Merit of the State of Bahia in 1991. In 2019 a 240-page biography gathered forty years of his work.
