Born in Vilna and trained in Berlin and Dresden, Lasar Segall was a figure of German Expressionism before settling permanently in Brazil in 1923.

Here his palette opened: portraits of ordinary people, the mulatas, the landscapes of Campos do Jordão and the mangrove. Later came the harder series on war, emigration and the emigrant ship — the memory of someone who had come from far away and had seen what was coming. His house and studio in São Paulo is today the Lasar Segall Museum.
