He began in newspapers. Still a teenager in São Luís, he drew cartoons and comic strips for O Democrata; in 1940 he took up the easel, and in 1941 won first prize at the Salão de Dezembro with the painting Bêbados.
He discovered the French Impressionists and the German Expressionists in friends’ libraries, worked in monotype and woodcut and, in 1949, co-founded the Núcleo Eliseu Visconti. He moved to Ceará in 1950, joining the Independentes group alongside Antônio Bandeira and Zenon Barreto, and later to Salvador.
He illustrated dozens of books of short stories, poetry and fiction — one of the great draughtsmen of the Northeast.
